Registered Clinical Counselling
Clinical counselling uses mental health principles, values and techniques to aid you in gaining insight into existing challenges, gaining new skills, and creating emotional freedom from the past
What is Clinical Counselling?
Clinical Counselling offers intentional space and time to explore aspects of our emotional, mental, physical and energetic experiences, with the understanding that we are all connected to larger systems and contexts that shape our sense of self and how we relate to the world around us.
Somatic Counselling
Somatic Clinical Counselling; What is it?
The term "somatic" comes from the Greek word, “soma”, which refers to the living body. Somatic counselling is a body-oriented therapeutic approach that focuses on the mind-body connection. In somatics, we understand that the body houses the wholeness of our human existence, and that healing must include our physical aspect, as well as emotional. It involves cultivating deeper awareness of our body’s unique vocabulary in order to better understand ourselves and how we relate to all our relations.
Somatic counselling is particularly effective in addressing how stress and unresolved trauma affect our physiology, nervous system, and overall well-being. Our bodies remember what our minds have tried to forget. Many of us have learned to “swallow” our truths and to “stay strong” in order to survive. These suppressed emotions don’t disappear; they find a home in our bodies’ tissues, nervous systems, and can impact our general health.
Acupuncture + Somatic Counselling with Oiyu Chan
Acupuncture is an ancient and powerful treatment method that can restore communication between mind-body-spirit by facilitating the flow of qi and blood. In addition to acupuncture, combination sessions may involve the use of guided imagination, breathwork, therapeutic touch, or movement exercises.
Acupuncture + Somatic Counselling combination sessions may be suitable for addressing the following:
Nervous system dysregulation – chronic hyperarousal (over-activation), chronic hypoarousal (shut down), or oscillation between hyperarousal and hypo-arousal
Trauma healing – acute trauma (i.e. singular event) or chronic trauma (eg. developmental trauma, intergenerational trauma, racial trauma, ongoing impacts of colonization and capitalism)
Psychosomatic symptoms or pain – (eg. anxiety-related chest tightness, stress-related abdominal cramps, autoimmune flare-ups, etc.)
Feeling stuck in emotional, relational, behavioural or addictive patterns despite engaging in talk therapy
Feeling a lack of vitality in life – desire to embody wholeness and connect more deeply with self and others
These sessions may be claimed by extended health plans (please check with your insurance provider). Combination session invoices are split between Registered Clinical Counselling (RCC) and Registered Acupuncture (R.Ac).
